REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TOKYO - Japan's health ministry on Thursday (10 / 3), reported the deaths of six infants who had recently received a vaccine made by Pfizer vaccination or Sanofi-Aventis. Use of the vaccine has now been suspended since last week.
The ministry said that a boy was known, ranging in age from six months to a year, died seven days after receiving the vaccine from Sanofi Pasteur ActHIB combined with DPT vaccine for diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus on 15 February. The latest case followed an earlier report that says that five infants aged under three years old have died since the beginning of February after receiving vaccination alone or in combination with other drugs.
At least three of the six babies suffering from congenital heart disease and other diseases. The Ministry has suspended Prevenar made by Pfizer, based in New York. The use of ActHIB vaccine, Sanofi Pasteur's production which is a branch of Sanofi-Aventis, headquartered in Paris, was also halted. The government is currently investigating whether the vaccine is associated with the death of their children.
A group of medical experts said they could not identify a specific link between the deaths and the vaccine. Ministry of Health is currently carrying out detailed investigations. Both vaccines have been given widely to childrenthroughout the the world for many years to prevent infection of bacteria that cause pneumonia and meningitis .
